Make hidden files and folders visible in Finder (Mac OS X)

Today I had a small problem - how to make hidden files and folders visible in Finder?

After some researches on the web, I found the following solution:

Open the Terminal and run the following command:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
Before the changes will take effect, you need to restart Finder by running the following command:
killall Finder
Done!

To hide hidden files invisible again, open a Terminal and run the following command:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder

  1. why is it so difficult to show the hidden files on Mac. It takes only a few click and a tick on Windows.

  2. It is much easier to do with freeware apps like Funter (http://nektony.com/funter). It takes even less time than on Windows
